MGI's Deputy Director, Dr. Ava Maxam Delivers Keynote at SDC's Annual GIS Day

Dr Ava Maxam, Deputy Director of the Mona GeoInformatics Institute, delivered the keynote address at the annual Social Development Commission (SDC) Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day, held in St Ann, Jamaica on Friday February 9, 2018 under the theme "GIS: Guiding the Change...Shaping the Future of Community Development".
Dr Maxam stressed the need for more people to become involved in strengthening the country's spatial infrastructure, towards building policies that are informed by comprehensive spatial databanks and models supported by historical and current data, as well as using the trends and patterns we derive from spatial data to help accurately predict future outcomes. Several areas of policy were highlighted including security, coastal resilience, agriculture and education, with the challenge given for each member of a community to take on at least one development goal this year by using readily available spatial information and platforms to make the case for community upliftment.
